Vivat Bacchus London Bridge

'Tis the season to be jolly and all of that. When meeting a friend for the last of my planned Christmas festivities, I decided on a restaurant right near the station I travel home from. Lazy, I know.  I have heard of Vivat Bacchus, it's owned by a few South Africans and the wine list is predominantly South African, a rare thing in London. It's been open in London Bridge since 2008 and there is another restaurant in Farringdon that has been open since 2001. I don't know why it's taken me so long to visit here.

I am a massive lover of steak and they have a great selection, but it's not every day you see kangaroo on the menu. So my friend and I both chose the kangaroo steak with Nam Pla Vietnamese dressing, triple cooked chips & salad garnish (£14.75)  The steak was cooked and rested perfectly. The meat was extremely lean but still packed full of flavour and the chips were fat and crunchy, just how I like 'em. I'm not one to add sauces to my steak, so I thought the Vietnamese dressing superfluous to requirements.


I didn't order a starter because I was saving myself for the cheese room. Yes, you read correctly - Vivat Bacchus has a cheese room! Those that are regular readers of this blog will know that I am not a sweet tooth and 9 times out of 10 will order the cheeseboard for dessert. When you're ready to order, a cheese expert takes you into the room asks a few questions about your likes and dislikes and then helps you put together your very own cheeseboard. Genius. There was lots of ooh'ing and ah'ing from my friend and I, there may even have been a few squeals of delight and that hand clapping that girls do when they're happy.  In all the excitement, I don't recall the names of the cheeses we ordered, but we had a soft, a blue, a hard cheese and a goats cheese. A pretty standard selection,  but I just loved that I could choose the cheeses that I wanted. We paid £32.30 for 2 boards, which sounds steep but totally worth it. It came with several chutneys, different fruits and a few varieties of crackers and breads. It really was a cheeseboard to behold.


Service was friendly and everyone was extremely knowledgeable. It's a pet hate of mine when staff don't know their product, but this is definitely not the case here. We received some excellent recommendations and overall had a very enjoyable experience. 

The total bill came to £112.84 including a glass of champagne, a bottle of wine, 2 main courses, 2 cheese boards and service. 

I travel through London Bridge every day, which may become a problem for me (or my wallet more likely) because it means that there will be many a pit stop at Vivat Bacchus! As they say on their website - "Life is too short to drink bad wine"
