I was in Dublin this weekend to catch up with a dear friend and to see my favourite band play at the O2. I flew in on Saturday and after checking into our hotel we headed into the city centre for some lunch. Our friend John decided to take us to his favourite restaurant, L’Gueuleton located just off of Grafton Street in the Temple Bar area of Dublin City centre.
From the outside, the restaurant is quite unassuming and on a cold day like it was on Saturday, there was no one sitting at the tables outside. Inside was a different story though. Packed to the rafters at 14:30 and with a lively atmosphere, it was clear to see that this was a favourite of many. We were seated at the bar for an aperitif while we waited for a table to become available, but the wait really wasn’t long at all. The décor is very typically French Bistro in style, bare wooden tables, quirky artwork on the walls but what stood out for me was the beautiful pressed copper (I think) ceiling. It was absolutely gorgeous and really added to the warmth of the restaurant.
The lunch time menu is more limited than the evening menu I am told, but it still took some time in deciding what to have. In the end we decided to share an artichoke and porchetta salad with fig dressing (no price available online) and one of the signature dishes, a French onion soup (€8.50). The salad was pretty unmemorable. Fantastic sounding ingredients, but it just didn’t live up to expectations. I would’ve liked to see nice big slices of artichoke, but afterwards we couldn’t actually remember eating any. It’s only when I look at the picture that I see it was really on there.
The French onion soup on the other hand was probably the best French onion soup I have ever had the pleasure of eating. I mean, it aint pretty but my goodness was it tasty! It was rich and boozy, with nice big slivers of softened onion in it. The croutons with gruyere cheese adding yet more flavour and different textures to the soup. It was heavenly, I only wish I didn’t have to share the bowl!
I chose the beef brisket sandwich with sweet mustard mayo and French fries (€13.50) for my main meal. I loved every last bite of it. The beef was a generous portion and slow cooked to perfection, the toasted bread wasn’t too thick and doughy and it was piled with rocket to give it a nice peppery flavour. I usually prefer thick cut chips, but these French fries had just the right ratio of fluffiness to crispness. It came with a little pot of garlic aioli that was creamy and not too overpowering. All in all a very tasty lunch that if I was being greedy, I could’ve eaten all over again. We decided to forego dessert as time was not our side.
Service was a tad slow at times, but they were extremely busy and we had a lot of catching up to do so it didn’t bother us all too much. Our friend John picked up the bill, so I didn’t see the total cost. But I would say that from looking on the website that L’Gueuleton is pretty fairly priced for a lovely meal in a very central location. If you’re ever in Dublin, I would highly recommend you stop by.
